Pregnant During The Cold Season

We all know that it is safest to avoid medications while pregnant, but during the months of cold season that can seem an impossibility. There is still no cure for the cold, but you may want to try some home-remedies for the symptoms.

First and foremost, get some rest. If possible, take a day or two off work to give your body adequate opportunity to fight the cold. Try to find a friend or family member who can care for your child while you sleep for a few hours.

Remember that your body is fighting dehydration when you have a cold, so keep your water bottle handy. Although fluids may make your stuffy nose become a runny nose, the increased energy and stamina that comes from being properly hydrated may be worth the box of tissues you go through. Just having enough sleep, and keeping your body hydrated can have a dramatic impact on the way you feel.

Here is a list of suggestions that other mothers have found useful. Use the ones that seem the most comforting to you.

  1. Unclog a stuffy nose and sinus in a warm shower.
  2. Keep a humidifier or vaporizer near your bed at night.
  3. Drink your favorite warm tea.
  4. Go for a short walk in the fresh air.
  5. Take a long warm bath to relax sore muscles.
  6. Take frequent rests during the day.
  7. Eat light, but eat quality like whole wheat toast and chicken soup.
  8. Ask a friend or spouse to massage your back and neck.
  9. Go to bed early.
  10. Keep stress at a low level.
  11. Wash your hands religiously to prevent the spread of colds.
  12. Be sure to eat vitamin C foods every day.
  13. Use petroleum jelly to lubricate your nasal passage.
  14. Don't overblow your nose, it may lead to nosebleeds.
