Tips for Pregnancy Massage

Want to provide a relaxing pregnancy massage for someone, but are not sure what will feel the best? Here are some tips to help make you an expert masseuse.

  • Use gentle, smooth touch.  Avoid heavy kneading touches unless she asks for them.  Avoid percussion techniques (rhythmically knocking or drumming on the body).
  • Pay special attention to areas most commonly uncomfortable during pregnancy.  These are the feet and legs, back and abdomen.  You will also want to check tension hot spots, the neck and shoulders.
  • Abdominal massage should be gentle. Stroking in a circular rhythm is usually most comfortable. Don't be surprised if baby responds to the massage.
  • Use cushions to achieve a comfortable position, lying on the side rather than back or stomach. If she wants to lie on her back, put a cushion under her knees to help keep her back in proper alignment.  Be aware that getting up from a back-lying position should be done slowly and carefully to avoid light-headedness.
  • Back massage can easily be achieved by sitting backwards on a kitchen chair.  Place a pillow between the chair back and the mother, and let her lean over the edge of the back of the chair resting her head on her arms.
