Emotional Preparation for ChildbirthA component often missing in childbirth education classes is the emotional preparation for natural childbirth. Unfortunately, for many women, the emotional component is more important than practicing squatting positions or backrubs. The way you feel about what is happening to you in pregnancy and during childbirth will affect your ability to remain relaxed, deal with pain and discomfort and make informed decisions. One of the indicators of a woman's successful natural childbirth is her confidence in her ability to give birth. No one can give you confidence in your body, in the birth process or in yourself. You have to find your own sources of strength, and know how to use them during childbirth. Finding your sources of strength will be easier for some women than others. The following list of words is given to help you find your strength. It is not necessarily easy, and it won't always be quick. But working through the questions in this section will strengthen you in powerful ways. To begin, read the list of words, and select the word that means the most to you. This will be your starting point, so read the accompanying page for that word first. Read the thoughts for your word, stopping to reflect at each point. Take some time to work through the questions for your word, writing your answers in a journal. Please be aware, you will get out of this exercise what you put into it. Give yourself time to really dig into the words that catch your attention. You will probably want a quiet place to be alone, it is normal for this exercise to expose very powerful emotions. You may find going over what you wrote in your journal with a trusted friend makes this exercise even more powerful.
