Should a Christian have prenatal tests?
Proverbs 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
Proverbs 19:8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers.
It is important to have accurate information to base my decisions on. Prenatal testing gives me answers to questions I have about what I should or should not do to ensure my health and the health of my baby.
Proverbs 14:22 Do not those who plot evil go astray? But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness.
I feel confident that the way I use the information I obtain from prenatal testing is good, not evil. The information helps me prepare and plan.
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Proverbs 19:2 It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.
I want to have as much information as possible about what is happening so I can make the right decisions. I would hate to have a problem that I could have avoided if I had just taken the time to explore all the information available to me.
Proverbs 8:12 ďI, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion.Ē
Psalm 119:66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands.
Wisdom is not just learning as much as possible, it means making the choices about what is and is not necessary or appropriate. Some of the prenatal tests have risks for my baby, and the information they give wonít affect the way I handle myself. I donít see a need to risk my baby's health for information that will not cause me to make any changes.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
Psalm 20:7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
I want to be discerning in the tests I choose to have. I donít want myself to put more faith in tests and the medical establishment than I do in God. I trust God, and I trust the guidance of the Holy Spirit. So far I have no reason to suspect there is anything abnormal about this pregnancy so I donít see the logic in asking for a test that can cause harm to my baby to reassure me that everything is ok.
