Spiritual Encouragement in Labor

The single most important ingredient for a woman planning to have a natural birth is encouragement. When she thinks she can't go on, just hearing someone else tell her that she is doing great can quickly change her mood.

It is not always easy to come up with the right words during labor. To increase the chances your support team will have the right words to say, consider the following suggestions for encouraging words during labor. Chose a few you like the best, write them on cards for your coach or assistant. Have him or her read them to you over and over during hard labor and transition. Or you can place them around the room and read them as you walk through labor.

Trust in the Lord, He'll bring you through.
The Lord knows how much you can do.
Trust in the Lord, He'll bring you through.
And He will help you do this.

God is in control, not you;
God is in control, not me;
God is in control, not your baby;
God is in control.

God designed women to give birth;
God made you a woman.
God designed women to give birth;
God made you capable of this.

The Lord's timing is perfect;
He will deliver you.
The Lord's timing is perfect;
He knows just what to do.

Jesus suffered;
He understands your pain.
Jesus suffered;
He knows how bad this feels.

God did not give you a spirit of fear;
But of power and love and self-control.
God did not give you a spirit of fear;
But of peace and joy and hope.

The Lord is your strength and your shield;
He will protect you.

God's thoughts are not our thoughts
Lean on his wisdom.
God's ways are not are ways
Lean on His strength.
